Playing Division 2 on PC with a Controller

The Division 2 is making headlines lately and despite what one might be led to believe after the somewhat awkward scripted dialogue at E3, it’s not because people are making fun of it. If you’re playing it right now, you know why...

As was the case with everyone’s favourite Italian Renaissance assassin, Ezio Auditore, the Division franchise sees Ubisoft take a good, if possibly slightly underutilised idea and do it justice with the second serving.

Combat is tighter, the worst of the bullet sponge mechanics from the first are gone, Washington DC is streamlined, and the ever-present hook of looter shooters sinks in deep, with a constant trickle of upgrades and fancy effects to urge us ever onward. The oft overlooked strength of a solid loot-driven game is the almost meditative quality of the grind.

An equally oft overlooked side effect of PC gaming is that there’s nothing meditative about sitting upright in a chair, hand clasped on the mouse, fingers tapping away at the keyboard keys. It’s damn effective, sure. But not exactly relaxing. The laid back style of gaming was always right at home in the realm of the consoles, and while most pure blooded PC gamers are loathe to admit it, it is one trait many of us sometimes wish we could emulate on our gaming machine of choice.

Luckily, the Division 2 for PC is just as playable on a controller as it is on mouse and keyboard. Yes, yes, we know, your aim won't be quite as snappy, but this isn't a competitive esport, so calm down.

Kick back and grab a wireless controller, because making the switch to a controller on PC is a bit complicated:

  • Step 1: Grab your favorite drink.

  • Step 2: Plug your Stratus Duo's wireless adapter into a USB port.

  • Step 3: Start the game. That's it. No device drivers, no software updates.

  • Step 4: ...

  • Step 5: …

  • Step 6: …

  • Step 7: …

  • Step 8: …

  • Step 9: Why are you still here?

  • Step 10: No seriously. That was it. Just plug it in and play.

So there you have it. In ten very simple, if somewhat redundant steps, you’ll be kicking away from your desk, putting your feet up and gaming console style in a matter of seconds. And when you’ve had enough lootin', shootin', and grindin', you can slide back to your desk for a round of PvP... and then right back to lootin' 🍻
